Hi, my name is Art Denisenko (LinkedIn account), and I’ve been living in the U.S. for nearly twenty years. Over the years, I’ve explored different businesses and switched career paths more than once. However, the two constants in my journey have been search engine optimization and digital marketing in general.
In 2010, I launched my first local business – D’Art Painting (Yelp account) – which specialized in interior and exterior painting services. Like many entrepreneurs, I turned to online resources for guidance, and almost all of them emphasized the importance of having a website. With no budget to hire professionals, I decided to build it myself. Using Joomla, I managed to create a pretty impressive site, and I was thrilled with my newfound skills.
So, as you might have guessed, D’Art Painting didn’t last long. After closing it, I pivoted and started a local web design agency (Yelp account) to help other small businesses build their own websites.
Here’s the twist:
No one really wanted a website – or at least not the kind I was building. One of my first clients bluntly told me, “All I need is my company’s name and phone number on the website. That’s it.” He didn’t care about fancy designs; he cared about what the website could do for his business. And you know what? He was absolutely right. Websites are tools for driving profit, not decorative art pieces for contests – especially when it comes to local small businesses.
Three Appliance Repair Businesses
In my career, I’ve built and sold three appliance repair companies for a profit. My most recent venture, City Appliance Repair (Yelp account), was where I was a technician myself for over a year – yes, I was hands-on, fixing appliances every day during that time.
Why did I decide to become an appliance repair business owner? Because I know how to build appliance repair businesses that make money.
My first appliance repair company wasn’t hugely successful, but I managed to get it to the point where it was consistently bringing in one or two jobs a day, so I sold it. Then, I launched another appliance repair company with the goal of selling leads and generating revenue that way. After about six months, I sold it as well.
Eventually, I realized I could open another company, but this time, I would also fix appliances myself to capture 100% of the income. This led to the creation of City Appliance Repair, where I not only learned how to repair appliances but also how to maximize profits. In just nine months, I grew it from zero to $10K in monthly net income after paying all business and marketing expenses.
The problem? I enjoyed doing marketing, but I didn’t enjoy fixing appliances every single day. I remember I started earning above $1,000 in a single day and feeling zero excitement. Moreover, even during my time running the appliance repair business, I continued working with marketing clients and helping their businesses succeed. I knew that if I couldn’t dedicate 100% of my focus to the appliance repair business, it was best to sell it and move on. That’s when I sold the business again.
Then, I decided to take a break from marketing and shift my focus to another area of expertise – technology. I initially joined a startup, where I successfully led a development team working on a SaaS product for Netflix. Eventually, I transitioned to Netflix as a contractor to further my tech career.
However, in 2020, I joined another startup as an SEO advisor. The success of these efforts led the company to offer me the Head of Marketing position, where I spearheaded their marketing initiatives.
Despite my attempt to step away from marketing – even joining one of the world’s largest tech companies, Netflix – I ultimately found my way back to my true passion: marketing.
My Clients
In addition to my personal ventures, I’ve had the opportunity to help other companies grow. One of my clients, A Plus Appliance Repair, grew 10x over the years, and I was the sole online marketing specialist they worked with. Beyond local businesses, I’ve worked with several tech startups, one of which achieved remarkable success – growing from the ground up to a team of nearly 100 employees while significantly enhancing its online presence. Today, I bring proven expertise in marketing for local service businesses and SaaS startups. Next, I aim to help an e-commerce business achieve exceptional success, further expanding my personal portfolio.
